Now, looking back I've gained a much better idea of what I really want to say on my postcards, now I've got few hundred left with things I'd like to rework on my next batch.

The first batch of bandit signs go up this weekend coupled with more drive bys.  

However, I don't know how common this is, but recently I mailed out a batch of yellow letters and when I checked my PO Box about half of them got returned.

I'm probably overthinking this, but I'm wanting to make sure my first, large batch of mail hits during an optimum time, not one where people are going to be too focused on the holidays to act.

Mailing to your prospects more than once per MONTH leads to diminishing returns.You can batch out your mail such that you are mailing something every week (that is a GOOD idea as it levels out your work flow), but do not cycle all the way through your list more often than once per month.

I bought a list from list source once, batch skip traced it, and by the end of both of those processes, I ended up with 50% of the phone numbers actually putting me through to someone.

If you're mailing small, throwing a batch of hand written ones to test the response rate will let you know whether the extra time investment is worth it for you.

You might have more consistent calling through out the month if you do batches of 250, when compared to doing all 1,000 at once.
