Some recruitment systems have started asking for it as an applicant disambiguator to stop different agencies submitting the same candidate but I always give a fake number an this is misuse similar to how the misuse in the US started.

I have also seen several people buy a house (40K) and work their tails off gutting and rebuilding the property putting another 60 to 70K (borrowed) in materials while recruiting friends and family for help only to see a 10K return in 1 year.
