Also, and more importantly in my case, they warn that older buildings may need serious capital expenditures in the future JUST when you don't want to be hemmorhaging cash, such as the first few years of retirement.

There's no doubt that things like SS and Medicare are huge drains on the system, but unfortunately that's not something that politicians have any control over on a year-to-year budgetary cycle.If you look at the things that politicians DO control (the expenditures that aren't governed by law), Defense is more than 50% of the total spending...Btw, I certainly think our politicians should be looking at the mandatory expenditures as well, but I'm not confident anyone will be successful at getting things like SS and Medicare legal dismantled.
