I never trade with tenants.

Certain trades I wouldn't skimp on, like electrician, plumbers, etc, but sometimes you can get away with bringing them in to do the finish only, or you can pay a licensed trade or GC to come and inspect the work prior to closing up walls, etc.

Really, I don't need it immediately but want it for a nest egg/emergencies/vacancies. 

I'm also open to investing in emerging areas and putting in the effort to develop the property.Thank you in advance for your time and energy.

It's slow out there for a lot of trades in SA right now and I'm not one to gatekeep.

I'm also fairly skilled in the trades so I know what to look for when it comes to certain things and I can do alot of things myself but time is usually hard to manage.

Maybe work in the RE business somehow; lending, assistant to an agent, the trades or start your own business like lawncare or landscaping to generate money.

I actually partnered with a GC on this one and traded equity for them bringing some funds to the table but mostly bringing project in on time and on budget.

You'll need a cleaner who is willing to do some extras (for extra pay) such as receiving packages for restocking or replacing worn items, or being the local contact person in an emergency.
