It's about equally close to Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill, and I've had a couple friends with families move from Raleigh to Pittsboro when they wanted a bigger house/more land while having similar commute to RTP area offices. 

I'm looking to get into this for the cash flow in the short term, with the goal to be able to help put my kids through college, and ultimately be able to enjoy life as my family matures.I'm in the Michigan / Metro Detroit area, but am also looking at long distance investing as an option. 

That is the NYC commute range people do.    

I have a long commute to work so I have been listening to the podcast and I love them!

Currently looking at all North Shore branches of the commuter rail, for a little more security against vacancy.

No URI student is going to commute from the Providence area down to the campus.  

Specifically, how close is it to major commuter roads, what are the ratings of the schools in the area, what new businesses are expanding or moving into the area, have any new franchises recently opened within a 2 miles radius of the neighborhood, and what is the crime?  

I've found that distance gradually forms between people who don't share your goals/values without anything needing to be said.
