If you do retain them, I would treat them like a new tenant and at a minimum income qualify each adults ability to pay the rent at the new amount, and do a background check.

To make things worse, this couple was unable to adult and fill out the necessary paper work on time on multiple occasions, pushing back the closing to 8 days.

Sadly, SIL renewed it for another year, but with MIL not in the house any longer the only adult in the house is one with no steady income and crappy credit history.We can't advise her, she's not listening and my husband can't get a word in on the phone.
