Don't ruin your REI or your business by seeing a shiny carrot. 

While I prefer using "the carrot" (like others have mentioned above), you should also carry "the stick" in your back pocket in case the carrot isn't working. 

You gotta leave a carrot out there to get them to completely finish the job and finish it well.

The situation isn't ideal, but if you give them a carrot and they accept, it will be much easier to get what you need to get done and it will be a much less stressful situation.
