After college, I plan on moving back to my hometown of Milwaukee to begin my investing career, and would like to make the best use of my time here, while providing value to a real estate investor whom I can admire and emulate. 

Like when my fiancee spends a lof money on a really nice bag,  but really it will only ever be admired by other women.Is the knowledge gained anything outside of what's available  in a solid RE Financial Investment manual or through research online about core CRE topics?

A couple of the main driving factors for me to get started in real estate is becoming financially free (of course investing in real estate involves debt...but you know what I mean) the future that I can provide for my 6 year old son and let's face it, while being a public servant may be admiral etc a person isn't going to retire with a ton of money so this provides a good foundation to build off of with respect to retirement.
