Hi Ryan, I just graduated college in May. I agree with Chris that you should definitely pick a major that makes you marketable. I graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering and have definitely acquired a set of skills (construction mgmt, scheduling, structural design, etc) that make it easier for me to hop into this field of REI. Finance is also a good major to choose as it goes hand in hand with REI. No college education will beat experience in the industry, but picking something that is related to real estate will at least give you peace of mind when 1) you decide to pull the trigger 2) knowing you have something stable to fall back on in case real estate doesn't work out for you. Not to mention that W2 income will make you eligible for those standard loans.

@Julie Marquez that's the field I would be getting into in a 9-5. Really good points you make. Thanks Julie!

@Christopher Giannino yup you answered my question pretty spot on! It's mostly a matter of opinion, and I like to hear as many opinions as possible. Thanks for your insight Chris!

@Christopher Giannino @Jonathan Streufert sorry for the late reply guys!

Definitely agree about the financing point. My question is more about the experience that comes with working a 9-5. Learning how to communicate with people and generally how a business runs.

I'm a fresh civil engineering college graduate, and some people (generally men of industry that are 50 years old+) live by the mantra of gaining "experience"  by working at a company. I agree that if I went into construction management for a couple of years that I would gain insight that I could definitely carry into real estate. But I've been working in facility management and managing daily operations of 25,000 sq ft of space since I was 17 up until a few months ago.

I've listened to all the podcasts a few times over and read a lot of the success stories on here and there are definitely investors that go into real estate raw and experience massive success.

What do you guys think? 9-5 experience a neccessity? Just curious to hear it from the RE pros!

Thanks for your time!
