Post: Dual use properties - residential / commercial - question?

I was wondering what experience anyone has had with residential/commercial properties. I've seen properties for sale with commercial space at street level (storefronts), and apartments upstairs. In general, are these good investments? Would something like this be a better bet then just residential landlording?

I've read around that it is not worth it to invest in a machine unless you're looking at a 4plus building. The only positives seem to be value-added bonus points to your tenants - saving them a trip to the laundromat. It doesn't seem like an investment with a great return unless you've got enough units.

I just read a good article in SmartMoney about IBM. I'm not in yet, but they certainly make a compelling argument.

I'm trying to figure out how to play the all time high oil prices. Any ideas? Buy drillers? Refiners? What would be the best play? If anyone has ideas, let me know.

Thanks CashInvestor and reiaddicted. I haven't been able to find this information anywhere else. Seems like a much more feasable idea now.

Thanks for the advice. I'm not actually looking to start a REIT anytime soon, but I am certainly curious. It really seems like a promising idea in the long run, doesn't it?

Its strange seeing a figure like the Pope going throught what he is going through. I can't imagine what the whole "catholic" world will do at his passing. Very sad thought.

No, not at Northwestern. Thanks for the welcome, though! I really like the site.
