Welcome, John, from the only guy here who isn't a realtor hoping to get your business.

Sadly I don't know north county though it's a nice area. I am downtown and in Tierrasanta.

I stumbled into it. Bought a house with my mother in 1999, inherited when she passed in 2010. Bought a condo for company use in 2010, liked living downtown so much I bought another one last year. Will hold them either forever or until I need to implement a retirement plan.

It happens. Just get back to work and you can rebuild it all. My wife lost $100k in a stupid investment but she learned from it and is now a better person for it.

Greetings from a fellow San Diegan. I just went to Hawaii for the first time and love it, though Waikiki is awfully crowded, worse than Japan. Might be good for you of course.

I'm done investing in new properties for a while, though one approach that seems like a winner is, look which currently "off" areas are undergoing gentrification, which you can see by tracking where the trendy bars flow. Some friends have done well following this.

Ah, El Cajon/La Mesa is a nice "value" area.

The very smart woman who manages a property for me has a great approach: Let applicants speak and just listen, and you'll hear all you need to hear. Nervous guy who can't stop giggling for some reason? You don't want him. Solid military family with respectful children? They would be much better.
