As a millennial who went from growing up poor here in Texas to having a wealthier family today because of Entreprenuership I found this thread very interesting!
I'll share a synopsis of my personal story.
First I'll state that Financial Independence is not everything & even though it's happened already for me, I'm continuing to save, invest & grow so I can afford a family soon & run a non profit ministry that's faith focused with family & friends. There are many things I value more than money like faith, relationships, travel, food, experiences etc.
I have friends from college in Oklahoma here in Texas now that make way over 6 figures & are on a financial treadmill & bored & stressed because they really dislike their career in law, etc.
I was taught a lot about work ethic & Entreprenuership growing up & went from Lemonade & washing cars to running a substantial lawn service & having a variety of fast food/retail jobs as well in high school & many times 3 at once. I grew up interested in both value investing & stocks & mutual funds as well as real estate & was lucky to find a mentor early on. In college I got roommates & bought my 1st property through savings & help from parents. This led to learning the business hands on & writing my own leases, doing repairs & renovations, other property etc.
By winning a business plan competition I launched an online business, worked another job & even took a year off school to become a resident. This allowed me to really grow & learn a lot & gain valuable experience.
Finally, I kept learning after college & raised funds & eventually sold my rentals to start a passive fund which is an oxymoron in itself that hires the best & brightest operators & property manages in a wide variety of real estate from apartments to owner finance to assisted living, mobile homes & more. It's been a huge blessing & changed my life & allowed me to focus on new ventures especially outside of real estate & hopefully support a family & ministry soon. I love it & hope I die with this passion & it grows to a 100 & beyond if I get there!
This is a great forum, app, service & post & it all has led to some great connections & helped me learn & grow too.
Millennials have their issues just like every & any generation & a high income or great habits won't fix anything. Although blowing $50k on a luxury apartment, car payment & endless travel & going out is really not a wise lifestyle & limits your ability to be truly independent & give back!
I drive a 2008 Focus with 125,000 miles & love it & frequently road trip the south for $100/week because it's community & unique experiences in after not lobster & heated seats with an empty room in the back. Next car is Elio from Eliomotors.com & I can already see myself in Maine next Fall!
