I'm not a professional or a "Guru", but I do play one on TV. (j/k) I would probably start by going to your local REI CLUB, and start networking. That's what I've heard on the forums, and a couple of the books I've read.

John Corey (aka: REI) will be buzzing in shortly to welcome you I'm sure, but if you look in the REO Forum he's got a lot of good info posted you may want to read first, as he covers a lot of the meat and potatoes about them from some of the nooby questions I asked.
