Quote from @Daniel Murphy:

There are a few things in your post to clarify first but...

"Annuity from an old job" typically means a pre-tax 401k. More likely a 403b from a school, or hospital if it's in an annuity. What type of employer was this from?  IE- this is likely a "qualified" account.

Most people's definition of a brokerage account is a taxable investment account.  IE- non qualified.

You "can" roll your old qualified account to a non-qualified account, but you will be taxed on the entire amount at ordinary income rates. Plus 10% if you're younger than 59.5.

Most common situation is you would roll your old 401k/403b "qualified" plan into a "qualified" traditional IRA. This would avoid taxes. You could potentially withdraw $10k for a first time home purchase and avoid the 10% penalty.

Look at the account statement from your old plan. If it says "Jesse Goswick, (401k, 403b, 457 etc.)", it's a qualified plan.

Look at the account statement from your brokerage account. If it says "Jesse Goswick, tod, jnt or jtwros", it's a non qualified plan.

There's a lot more to this, hard to put all in a response. Reach out to me if you have questions. I'm always willing to help out a CC resident :)

The annuity is from working on broadway pre-covid which was pretax, which would be going into a taxable investment account (where I'm keeping my down payment) unfortunately this would not be a 1st time purchase.

so I spoke with a CPA, and they said that more than likely I will be taxed on it if I were to transfer it to a regular brokerage account, which I was kind of assuming. also said to call and ask if there was a "basis" (not really sure what that means)

Absolutely! I will be reaching out to a few CPAs tomorrow (still have to work that W-2 HAHA) but I will definitely post the results.

thank you for the information I appreciate you, I will absolutely give them a call again first and I going to reach out to a few local CPAs to get the most accurate answer.

Good morning everyone! I have a question in regard to transferring funds from an annuity account into my brokerage account. I am getting started looking at investment properties and I was thinking about transferring the funds from my annuity from an old job over to my brokerage account to add to my down payment funds. my question or concern is, I'm wondering what the tax penalties will be and if there is a way to defer them by having the balance directly transferred from accounts instead of getting a check cut and depositing it? any help would be appreciated thank you.

Good morning everyone! Does anyone in the Cape Coral/Fort Myers FL area have an accountant who works with investors that they can recommend? I'm fairly new to the area and looking for some advice as far as where I can pull money from (other accounts) or if it's even a smart idea, along with some tax-saving strategies. thank you in advance, I appreciate all of the help.

Good morning and Merry Christmas/ Happy Holidays to you all. My name is Jesse and recently sold my home and moved to Cape Coral due to covid. I am currently looking for a real estate agent who can help me find a a suitable Duplex to house hack. I currently am laking in employment history as my job in NY was closed due to covid, I have a job down here now but just started. looking for advice and some guidance on how I should proceed, not quite sure if I should just sit back and build work history and a little more savings or if I can just get started. thank you in advance
