I'm fairly new to BP and also in Des Moines.  There are a few of us DM'ers on BP.  We have a BP meet up scheduled for Jan 31st at 5:30 PM at the Caribou Coffee on Ingersoll.  If you have the time you should join us.

Welcome to BP.  My favorite part so far is the podcasts but there are so many things to read and learn it's hard to pick a favorite.  I like them because I can listen to them on my drive back and forth to work.

Welcome Huw.  I'm new myself so I don't have any sage advice for you other than there is a lot to read, listen and learn on this site.  If you haven't already start listening to the podcasts they are educational, motivational and entertaining all at the same time.  Josh and Brandon do a great job.

Dec 22nd REI meeting. First one is free. Still in for coffee or something in Jan but maybe see you guys at the meeting.

I went to one of those Guru 3 days seminars.  It was awesome and well worth the $200 spent and the time.  The presenter talked about something he called Shadow Inventory (homes that are in default and have been for some time but have not been foreclosed on).  Wondering how much of what he said is true and what the community has for input on these.  His statement in short was that banks are about to finally foreclose on a large number of loans that have been in default, some for years.  Thoughts on this???

I am also in Des Moines area and am new to investing. Look up the local REI club also. There is a meeting later this month, 18th or 22nd can't remember for sure which. Welcome to Bigger Pockets. Lots to read here if you have the time.

Looking to buy in the Des Moines area.  Not sure exactly where yet.  I am hoping that a realtor can help me with information to make that decision.

As for why...the simple answer is to make money.  The longer answer is to eventually be able to leave my corporate job and invest full time.
