Getting a Real Estate License and Education through one of the many companies i.e. MoseleyKaplan, and CE Shop are great and extremely important from my point of view, but I can't agree more about this site providing some excellent "hands on" insight.

@Lori Burns and @Brandon Davis I recommend checking out Moseley Real Estate Schools which has their office located in Roanoke, for help making connections. If you take courses through them for your license, their career development department can help put you in touch with the right people and right information.

How many of you have mentors or another type of Real Estate Career Development Personnel to help you throughout your Real Estate Investment, Sales, or Brokerage employment journey?

If you don't know someone personally who has alot of experience and can give you the advice you're looking for, some Real Estate Education companies like Moseley Real Estate Schools will actually assist in your Career Development after you've taken their courses, which is definitely an added bonus if you're on the fence about getting licensed or not.

You don't have to learn or grow alone; that's why education companies, forums, blogs, etc. exist. Don't be afraid to ask for help, we're all learning here.

Word of mouth is key these days as it will often times be the only thing which will separate you from the good, the bad, and the ugly; to be chosen as the firm/realtor that someone goes with due to your reputation online AND in-person.

Beware, If you have bad reviews, you may see more than just your ratings plummet, your sales may not be far behind. Whether you're a Real Estate School, Licensed Real Estate Professional, or Investor, your reputation is everything.

Emilee, I would highly recommend it. If you lived near VA I would recommend Moseley Real Estate Schools, but since you don't, I would look at Kaplan Real Estate (the link will take you straight to their Michigan page), I have heard fairly good things about them. As far as Online vs. In-Person, I recommend going with whatever learning style best fits you. If you want a slower pace, In-Person will probably be a better fit whereas Online you can usually set your own pace and finish in whatever timeline you like.

@Trevor Smith

There are those sorts of programs in existence currently. Google picks up on alot of them, but self monitoring your campaigns on a regular basis will ensure that if all of sudden you're seeing huge jumps in traffic to your site through Adwords or other paid campaigns, you're most likely being spammed. If you talk to Google about it, they'll be able to investigate further and in some cases I've heard of businesses having their money refunded for that campaign since it was bad traffic.

I've also heard it the other way around when businesses add too many external links at once or try to drive an obscene amount of fake traffic to their site. One business which was nationally branded and had stores all over the US was apparently doing some black hat SEO work (obscenely large amounts of link building all of a sudden, posting links on completely unrelated sites, keyword stuffing etc.) and Google dropped them from the first page to the 14th page. It took them over 6 months to get back up to the first page.

How many people have received a formal education in Real Estate before doing any sort of investing, deals, etc.? Would you recommend it or are you a school of hard-knocks, learn as you go sort of individual?

This is unfortunately not a 3rd party source such as Search Engine Watch or Marketingland, but they do quote Moz (a fantastic tool that I use) in the second blog post, which is an extremely reputable source, so I would use this company's numbers as a good generalization. Other than that all of the info I found was from 2014.

If you're justing starting out with a website and want to build it yourself to save some cash, I highly recommend SquareSpace. They'll handle hosting, linking your domain name to the site, etc. They are pretty intuitive to use, look great, and fairly inexpensive. If you want something more custom, I suggest hiring a developer.

Once it's up and running, like alot of people have been saying, do SEO and if you're interested and have the capital for Targeted Adwords campaigns, go for it! Make sure you get someone who knows what they are doing, or else you'll flush a lot of money down the drain. For the most part stay away from companies like Yellow Pages, Yext, and other "canned" SEO campaign companies. They sound like great deals, but for the most part, beware. You want someone who can get to know your business, it's issues and strengths, and then create a personalized campaign for you. You'll have a better ROI and generally be happier with the customer service.
