Hi Nic,

This is not legal advice. My basic understanding is that you can use lethal force to protect yourself if you feel your life is in danger or you can use lethal force to protect someone else's life.

You cannot use lethal force to protect property. That means you cannot shoot someone if they are not threatening your life - so shooting someone in the back is a no-no - unless they are threatening someone else's life with their back turned toward you! Breaking into the car is also a no-no for shooting. I think there is precedent for believing your life is in danger if someone has broken into your house but you should check with a criminal or gun lawyer - Bruce Colodny is one local fellow.

I am in Los Angeles - may I ask what areas you are looking into investing in? I have my own favorite areas - mid city, east hollywood, etc. How about you?

Also - doesn't that RTF tear your hand up if you shoot a lot of rounds?? I held one at the shop and it was not comfortable to me!

Yes $5M is the most recent copy but its still like 40 years old. Nickerson died since then, so he hasn't been updating much recently.

You don't have to spend $50 on this book. I've gotten all three versions on Amazon or Half.com for under $5 each. Just keep your eyes out.

Here is one copy for $0.99 and one for $3.24

This is a pretty good book. The best one is the first - the $1,000,000 because of the additional entertainment value of his currently non-PC and illegal rental suggestions. Remember, this book was written 50 years ago, at least.

For example, he has a section in which he discussed whether or not you should rent to black people for fear of lowering your property values. He also talks about not renting to families, or single women - its pretty funny seeing as following any of those suggestions would land you in a big money fair housing lawsuit these days!

Post: Los Angeles County Tax Deed Sale

I see there is a LA County tax deed sale coming up in mid October.

There are some pretty nice properties that are being auctioned off for a few thousand or tens of thousands of dollars - should I count on the decent properties (i.e., those that are not plots of land in the desert covered in snakes and weeks) going for near market prices? Or is it possible to get a good deal at the tax auctions?

Has anyone had any experience successfully buying properties at the LA County Tax auctions?
