Hi Meghan,

My wife and I live in Coon Rapids, but have 2 rental houses in Duluth that we rent to college students. We also just purchased a house in Oliver, WI that we plan to run as a short-term rental. Feel free to reach out and we can give you information on our experience. We love Duluth and the north shore and hope to "retire" there in the next handful of years.

Hi @Mark ODay,

We are purchasing a property near Duluth, MN (Oliver, WI) on the St. Louis River and have similar questions about seasonality, etc. We have several long-term rentals we manage, but this is our first short-term rental. I will definitely pass along anything we learn in the process. Please pass along anything you learn in the process. Good luck with your endeavor. Lake Minnetonka is such a nice lake, I am optimistic you will do well.

My wife and I are closing on a property in Oliver, WI that we plan to use as a short-term rental. We currently have 2 long-term rental properties in Duluth (college housing), but are new to STRs. If anyone has experience operating STRs in the area, we would love to connect to learn best practices for the area, and any tips on resources for cleaners, property managers, maintenance teams, etc. We would love to share our experience / knowledge on LTRs in Duluth, Winona and the Twin Cities.

   Thanks,

        Corey

Hey Everyone,
We are closing on property in the Oliver/Superior area across from Duluth and looking for potential property management companies. I have reached out to Heirloom and am awaiting their response if they would manage in this area, but if anyone has other resources (cleaners, property managers, etc.) for a STR in this area, any input is appreciated. Thanks.

Quote from @Jessica May:

Hi, Corey,

Its been a few years since your post, but curious where you landed with finding a property manager for the south shore area.  I'm exploring a short term rental purchase in the area.  I'm planning to contact some of the owners as suggested in the prior thread, but curious how this turned out for you.

Thank you!

Jessica

 Hey Jessica,

We didn't end up purchasing in the area due to some erosion issues we found near the house we wanted to purchase. The property manager we liked and were planning to use was BarkPoint Ventures. We never met the owner (Erin) but had really good dialogue with her over the phone and e-mail. You should be able to find her contact information if you google the company. Good luck and let me know if I can be of any assistance.

We are looking at some properties that could be good short-term rental opportunities in Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Most of them are in the Houghton area. If anyone has experience with STRs in this area, I'd love to connect. Main questions are cost-benefit to renting in the winter, and what it is like trying to find resources for cleaning, snow removal, and repairs in that area as we live in the Minneapolis area.

    Thanks,

        Corey

Thanks Daniel. I actually did just what you suggested and am working with a few owners and a short-term rental management company on the south shore that seem very promising. I love how willing property owners are in helping each other out. Thanks for the advise.

We are considering a property near Port Wing, WI that we would use as a short-term rental. This city is about 60 minutes from Duluth, MN and about 40 minutes from Bayfield, WI. It is a lovely area near Lake Superior with nice hiking, waterfalls, snowmobile trails, etc. However, we would manage the property remotely as we live in the Twin Cities. Does anyone know of local companies that do cleaning, mowing/snow plowing, etc. in that area? I know there are probably options in Duluth/Superior and Bayfield, but it's a bit from those locations. I have talked to Heirloom Properties in Duluth as they have a great reputation and they said they may extend their services to the South Shore in the future. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

       Corey

Hey Jacob,

I don't have a management company in Winona for my rentals. I have a guy that does property management such as lawn care, repairs, etc but I handle all rent collection, tenant screening, etc.

  Hey Everyone,

I have a tenant in MN that is late on a few months rent and assures me that she was approved for $4500 in funding from Covid-19 Housing Assistance Program (CHAP), and that a check should be sent directly to me shortly. This was about a month ago. I know we cannot take any eviction action during Covid-19 due to state regulations, but does anyone have more information on this program or if there is a way to verify that this payment is coming? The tenant is not very forthright with information and only sends vague responses to questions. Any insight is appreciated.

     Thanks,

          Corey
