One of the most helpful tips I received a little bit ago was how useful mentioning people is when participating in forum discussions.  You can put an "@" symbol in front of anyone's name to make sure they get a notification for when they are mentioned in a forum post.  You can tell the mention is working if their name is highlighted in blue.   If you refer to them otherwise, they often won't see it unless they are subscribed to the topic.
