There are people who crave to live out in the country, as my husband and I did, and will pay for land to build a new home upon, but many cannot afford it and are looking for an older home on a few acres, usually 10 acres or less. I've known a couple of families who've lived in a nice barn and garage while they sold their previous houses, to make it more affordable to pursue living in the country until their new home was built. It takes dedication to do that with a family in tow, but there are families who will go to this trouble. I personally looked on websites specifically for properties being sold in rural areas, like landsoftexas.com, as well as contacted a realtor in the small town we were wanting to be closest to...
Anyway, rural land websites and local chambers of commerce would be good starting points...and the properties will sell faster if they have agricultural exemptions on them to lower the tax base...
