I use distributors, their sales guys are pros and understand my needs. The distributors provide free delivery, net billing, and a multitude of other perks. They share product info, estimates, future trends and pricing as well as days to meet the OEM reps.  Plus I get to have coffee with my friends while my truck is not being broken into.

A sub is a underwater boat or a tasty sandwich. Subcontracting is a contractual agreement between a specialty contractor & the prime contractor, in many cases a g.c. but not always. A specialty contractor is the prime in many instances. Referrals are common networking in most businesses.  All contractors are businesses. The number 1 rule of referrals is for no one to take it personally if a agreement is not made. Number 2 is don't poach other companies clients, if everyone is professional networking benefits all.

There is no such thing as a "unlicensed" contractor in California. A contractor by definition has a contractor license. That includes license, bond, liability insurance and other requirements . A handyman can do $500 in work, labor & material. No you can't break it up by task to evade the law.

@Daniel Sabato so the demo is already done. That's great! Get your infrastructure done i.e. MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) maybe throw in value add like low voltage i.o.t. etc. Rockit, paint it and install all the eye liner & mascara.

Sounds like a great opportunity. Don't trip just move forward. Have a positive attitude & don't overthink it.

FWIW $75k a year electricians don't want to work. I'm doing 10 to 12 hr days in the field. Plus doing office work. Worked solo through the pandemic.

@Justin F. Pardon my fat finger typing and auto correct. If the main panel has grid tied solar & battery and a breaker feeding the adu and the grid goes down then both the house and adu will run off the battery. The system should be sized to accommodate the load of the adu.

If the sub feed breaker trips at the main from the adu over current or grounding out (short circuit) then its isolated from the main and the battery wont power the adu.

Typically we run the grid tie on the main as to have the battery power everything.

I myself haven't done solar/ battery on an adu independent of the main in typical urban/suburban locations. It may exist but haven't seen it.

One thing to note with all of this is available breaker spaces, in particular at the main but not exclusive of the sub(adu). Its best to not use up all the spaces so that future distribution is available. Its not if but when additional circuits may need to be installed.

While appliances etc. are definitely becoming way more efficient, California codes on how many dedicated circuits has increased over the years, and will continue to increase. I.e the amount of available spaces is of importance.

Also note that ALL new main panel installs are required to be "solar ready" & have whole house surge arrestor. Sometimes the surge arrestor uses up some of the breaker spaces depending on the manufacturer.

Hope this helps

(Rural & off grid are a whole other thing)

@Pooja C. Pg&e assigns meter services based on apn. It also has to do with property taxes, for purposes of financing through pace or ygrene etc.

@Justin F. All service upgrades require customer to pay, upon final and meter release poco is responsible. Yes you are buying infrastructure for poco.
