House Hacking in Houston

All,

I just moved to Houston about four months ago for a new job. My plan is to buy a 2-4 unit when my lease ends in October. I am still trying to learn the area, so I am not sure about which locations in Houston are best for looking for small multifamily.

After some preliminary searches, it seems that most small multi are in lower class neighborhoods and not sure if that would be something I would want to house hack. Maybe a rent by room strategy would be a more sound strategy for this area?

I would love to hear some insights on people who have house hacked in Houston. Also would love to chat further with some investment sales agents to try and put together a gameplan to try and find something for me around October.

Thanks!

Hi @Thomas Monge welcome to the area. There isn't a ton of small multifamily inside Houston, and they are either high priced (Midtown, Montrose, Heights) or in rougher areas (Kashmere Gardens, Third Ward, East End). The majority are old as well (Many built from the 30's through the 50's), although there are a handful of builders who have been building duplexes over the past several years. If you are in the area, you should come to a meetup we are having on March 1st - our speaker for the month I believe has a couple of duplexes and a triplex and he invests in one of the submarkets south of Houston.
