Is cold calling better than direct mail?

I feel like this. At least when the seller calls me first I know they are interested. That is an ice breaker for me when they call me first because I don't have to worry about making some random phone call at the wrong time. I don't like cold calling for that very reason because I know how it feels to have someone randomly call me at the most inconvenient times. That is why I usually prefer sending direct mail.  The one benefit to cold calling is I get a quicker response from the seller rather than having to wait days and days "hoping" the seller will respond back letting me know whether they are interested in selling or not. What happens when skip trace does not provide phone numbers for those who do prefer cold calling?
