How to get a homestead exemption in Wisconsin (Dane County)?

Think of relocating to Madison WI area. Property taxes are shockingly high there and we are looking into having a small farm. Anyone know what’s required to get a homestead exemption due to having a small farm on your residence?

@Chris Webb typically what you see on the listing is what you pay. If you have over ten acres you can zone some of it as farm land and safe on taxes, but the current owner will have typically already done that.

We have higher property taxes but lower sales taxes in Wisconsin compared to many other states and especially major cities. When you do the math with an average annual income it comes out to be about the same, but you tend to not notice the 4 cents extra on your latte as much.
