I am trying  to get my kids excited and bold about DIY! They pulled up our carpet ( it was much needed ) and to out surprisr there are wood floors! It doesn't go all the way across as there was an extension made to the livingroom and that is plywood . But the majority of our livingroom is this and I am excited in taking our chances in redoing the floor.

I see it as practice at least lol!

@Mary lou L. This is such an exciting find. In older homes, oak was commonly used as a subfloor, then carpeting was put over it. I find this in a lot of my flips, and I am always just as excited as you when I find it.

If you are looking at a house, and don't want to pull up their carpet, an easy way to check if there is wood flooring under the carpet is to try to find a floor register and see if you can remove the cover easily. You can take a look at what is under the carpet that way.

Habitat for Humanity often has old wood flooring in decent shape. Wood floors are super easy to install with a flooring nailer. You can pick one up for $150-$300. Add an air compressor and start swinging. The trickiest part will be to line up the new floor with the old. If you are going to refinish the existing, I would install unfinished right next to it, then finish the whole thing at one time.

Good luck! I would love to see what it looks like when you are done.
