Meetups Near Portland, OR

Hello BP! I am near Portland OR and new to Real Estate. I am wanting to possibly create / join a meetup group around mid December - end of January and learn anything I can about real estate. I am interested in investing opportunities, shadowing the buying / due diligence process and want to take any opportunity I can to learn about this business. If anyone else is interested in creating a group near or outside of Portland that would be awesome. Also, if anyone is currently in the buying process and wouldn't mind meeting / entertaining a shadowing opportunity  to help me get some first hand experience that would be amazing as well. Thanks everyone that reads my post!

Eric, besides the great topics they cover and what you learn the networking is great. Someone I met there has become my friend and Mentor and because of him, my knowledge has grown by leaps and bounds this year!

This is great info. I haven’t heard of the Rarebird meetings, looking interesting. Looks like next months meeting in December is a members only holiday party.

@Zac Lindquist  you get what you pay for... not sure if the NW rei's are totally free sometimes its like 15 bucks at the door. not sure.

Rarebird is worth the annual fee.. from my personal perspective.. I am not a member but I have been an invited guest speaker on a few occasions and know the owners of the club..

good guys very very smart and in TUNE with THIS market... now to be fair I have never gone to a NW REIA meeting... although I have attened others through out the US>

and you have to be careful with those some times they are pitch fests..

BP members will have BP meetups.. but those are general just social go grab a beer and meet fellow BP members who post..

The first time you go they are free. Rarebird is $30 per month and NWRea is $15 per month. I agree with Jay, Rarebird is worth the money, they are serious about this business. NW REIA can have sales pitches from time to time but some of them are good. One of them was on Lease options, another on buying notes, informative but I don't buy in. They have the monthly meeting then they have satellite meetings like the one I like to go to is where we analyze deals.

They are all good networking opportunities. Rare birds and meet ups are great. Your local NWREI association is another source. I have not gone to a meeting yet but I get some ok leads and clients from being a member. Each has its role and pros and cons. It’s a numbers and networking game. As well as knowing your own value and what your looking for.

FYI, Go talk to your REI CPA and attorney to see how the tax changes will effect your investing, current partnership agreements, future intended agreement and how you incorporate your company. Huge change is depreciation write-offs and partnership classification as active or passive. Possibly consider equity partnerships now rather then passive partnerships for a silent investor, and crest paper trail of engagement my investors.

I just started a Meetup group in Portland! We alternate between the East and West side twice a week (Wednesday and Saturday). We had our first this past wednesday and it was a blast! Chill and relax with other real estate investors over a pint and let the night go where it can go. 

NO SALES PITCHES THOUGH. If you're selling something please leave can't stress that enough (as I pimp out my meetup).

Probably can't post links or anything and I don't want this taken down so just try to find me on Meetup.com!

everybody is selling something some time some place..  you may want to be a little more open minded on that score.. 

nothing says anyone has to buy what they are selling.. but there maybe some things out there that your audience  would be interested in hearing about..  other than just shooting the bull sheeeet and drinking  LOL..  I have been to many over the years and many as a guest speaker .. and not really selling anything.. but can talk about things that are not local  there is a lot of interest in many subjects other than what is happening in their direct area..   you will find that people will get board of talking about the same things twice a week and your attendance will drop and then the meetup just becomes a few buddies that want to get a beer..

Just some suggestions if your really trying to get some longevity and bring some value to those that take the time out to come to your meetup.

Hello Jay,

You're absolutely right! Although I do want to create an environment for newer investors to come into the scene and not be given a sales pitch. I was burnt out at a Legacy Education 3 day training event where we were berated with their 45k$  mentorship program. If the events turn into hanging out with friendly investors I still consider that a win! If one new person shows up to every meeting and I can make a lasting friendship/help them get started investing I consider that a bigger win!

What I meant by no selling was agents coming in and smelling blood and asking for what I was looking for before getting to know me, I told a woman at a meetup that I already had an agent (who is killing it already finding me off market deals) and was an agent myself yet she kept talking about finding me a deal and talking about collecting a referral fee and salivating over my desire to purchase an apartment building. It turned me way off. There's a right way to sell, and a wrong way to sell.

I could in fact be doing things the wrong way and I'll learn the hard way. But I really strongly believe what's holding people back is just simply people feeling like they're a number in some investor/agents pocketbook. That's what did it for me. So I want to change that and find other like minded folks!

And to be honest I stole this "chill and hang out with other real estate investors over a beer" meetup idea from The Best Ever Apartment Syndication Book by Joe Fairless/Jay Hicks. It worked for them and I'd like to see if I can replicate their success!

Gotcha..  just look for folks say one time a month to make a special presentation on something new and interesting .

but its your gig for sure.. just trying to be helpful since I have been going to those things for 3 plus decades.. 

and just some feedback from some of the better ones I have spoken at.
