former PMC still owes my $$$

Posted

Any advice on how I can collect $$$ from my property management company? I'm in California PMC is in Illinois. I thought about small claims court but the total amount owed to me is $990. By the time I fly out etc. it doesn't seem worth it, even though I could add those expenses. I filed a complaint with the BBB, this actually helped and they did send a payment but that was 2 months ago and I am still owed $$$. I also filed a complaint to the attorney general. I contacted an attorney but that doesn't seem ideal either. Any advice would be much appreciated.

You would not believe how many unlicensed "property management companies" in Detroit do this to OOS and OOC investors!

If this PMC is licensed properly, you can also research which real estate board they belong to and file complaint there.

You can also shred them on social media, just be careful you don't set yourself up for them suing you over it.

Illinois requires property managers to have a brokers license (or be affiliated with a broker) so I would reach out to the Illinois Division of Real Estate to file a complaint. However if they are unlicensed then your best bet is probably to chalk this up as a $990 lesson and make sure to only work with licensed companies going forward.

Update: I finally received all of my $$$. I went through the BBB and the Illinois Division of Real Estate to file a complaint. An investigator through the Illinois Division of Real Estate contacted me after I received all of my $$ but i advised him to follow up with my previous PMC as I am sure there are more people out there like me. He said he had not contacted the company yet but definitely intends to follow up as they have been reported previously. I provided my rental agreement and payment history etc. I am glad to have received all of my $$ and I thank @Joe Norman and @Drew Sygit for your advice.
