Curious if anyone has had success with short-term rentals at Lake Martin or Auburn University in Alabama?

And/or ----if anyone has used their rental or rental LLC to qualify for in-state tuition?

Thanks

So @Brent H., Auburn is a pretty big school at about 25k undergrads so I would guess there would be a need for short or longer stay rentals. Visiting educators etc might need living space for 3 months at a time. I would call the University and see what they say.

Now, regarding the LLC or the rental, that is considered a big no-no in most states. It is actually a criminal offense in some states as it is considered fraud.

For example, here is the University of Alabama's rules on qualifying for in state tuition - https://registrar.ua.edu/acade...

The bottom line is that it needs to be a permanent residence.

Most university towns have a "need" (using that word lightly) for STR's. Make sure you do your due diligence and see what the permitting is

Have always loved the idea of STRs outside of colleges with big football programs or just big universities. Would definitely check the local guidelines on this, but at face value seems like a solid idea.

Thanks and thanks Michael Baum - Yes, I think we would need to move and make it our primary, then consider making it a lake rental in the future...We'll do some research to determine if Auburn allows short term rentals - might be better for student housing/long term

My daughter goes to Alabama, we live in California. Universities have figured out every hole to plug to prevent that since about 55% of the students are from Out of State. We own two properties in Alabama, until we have Alabama drivers license's with our address and proof we reside there, it ain't happening. 15 months will be a different story when we move there. College housing doesn't pencil there at todays prices and STR nowhere near as lucrative as other markets.
