I started looking for multi family properties in NY that are affordable unlike NYC where I live and Rochester, NY keeps popping up. Does anyone know if this would be a good place to start investing in?

Good Morning Juan - Welcome to BP!

Rochester comes up a lot on BP, for exactly the reason you found it: we're a "neighboring" city to NYC, and it's cheaper than dirt here, compared to there. If you search around a bit, you'll find quite a few posts about Rochester, but if you're absolutely determined to invest out of area (you shouldn't be) there are probably better markets in the same travel range (also lots of posts on BP.)

I personally don't think there are very many folks in the US who can't find a good enough market to get started in, within a 2-3 hour drive (easy to do in a day) of where they live. Adding in the additional difficulty of investing at a distance, on top of the already steep learning curve isn't something I would advise people to do.

A couple links to other posts on this topic I have contributed to:

Recession and Job Loss

Rochester Market

And just search for Rochester on BP, and you'll find plenty more.

That said, there is a relatively large investment community here - @Mark Updegraff is a great resource, should you get serious about wanting to buy in Rochester. Pretty sure he's one-stop shopping (Realtor, Rehabber, and PM) these days, but you'd have to talk to him to find out for sure.

Good luck!
