How to find top employers in a given area/Do other area research

What sites do you guys use to get really good handle on a given area employment and growth prospects when you are evaluating a new area you might buy property in?

I use bestplaces.net, neighborhood scout, and spot crime to get basic gist of an area, but I feel like it is too general.

I'm looking to get more specific things like:

1- employment by quarter

2- top area employers and # of employees

3- commercial construction permits and values

Stuff like that. Thanks for any help.

@Jonathan C. Our group pays for costar which has a wealth of information and have found it very useful for buying multi family properties across the southeast us. If you are interested you should speak to costar and a local rep will give you a demo before you purchase. FYI they don’t do discounts, free trials, or anything like that
