Question on referral fees in Texas

Greetings all.  I have a question for those of you who have done business in Texas.  

I've been told that the only way you can get paid on a real estate deal in Texas is if you have a RE License. So an individual who is taking a marketing, assignment or consulting fee cannot legally be paid for having anything to do with a real estate transaction.

Does anybody have any experience in closing deals in Texas?  Your help would be greatly appreciated.

In Texas, you can give a gift of merchandise up to $50 in value but cannot give cash, gift cards, rent bonuses or discounts.
