Can you really buy properties for less than $100?

I occasionally get calls from people looking for me to do a lot of foot work only to find out they are looking for properties for less than $100 or maybe less than $1000 to flip or rent out. Are these properties out there? Is there a list I'm unaware of? I don't want to be giving someone bad information when they call however I'm not aware of these properties or how to find them. What direction do you steer someone who is looking for this type of deal?

typically properties like this cost more to repair to make livable than what they are worth.
