It will be OK ... you can ask them to deliver a couple of tin-foil hats along with the meter.Most of these meters communicate over hydro lines themselves, there are a few which have wireless communications capabilities (usually with less electromagnetic output than your home WiFi access point).

I like copper too but it is not ideal for all situations, depending on soil type, water acidity, galvanic action of connected materials, electromagnetic fields, etc.

Unless they're practicing EMCON (emission control in military speak), you'd think we would have detected THEM first, but so far SETI (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) and other scans across the electro-magnetic spectrum have produced bupkis.

As for power poles, if they're large hydroelectric lines, I'd definitely be concerned because of the electro magnetic field.

I could go into an entire explanation of the physics involved, but bottom line is that you are getting more electromagnetic radiation from your phone, than you actually are from the tower servicing it.
