Electric company smart meter

I received a letter from the electric company today that they're installing a "smart meter". There's been a lot of controversy about these meters. People claim that they "give off rediation", the "government will know when you are using electricity", and that "rates will go up". They give you an option to keep your old meter at an upfront cost of $67.20 and a monthly cost of $9.80.

I'm only concerned about the possible radiation. From reading stories on the internet, there's many different opinions and it's difficult to sort through fact and fiction. Does anyone know anything about these meters and how much radiation they actuially give off? One article that I read said it gives off less than a microwave for less than two seconds a day. Other articles claim that people can't sleep after these meters are installed and have all other sorts of problems.

Any input would be appreciated.
