I have been told by several agents in Pennsylvania (where I live) that you have to hang your license with a broker (I'm not sure if this is a PA requirement or pretty standard nationally).

I was going to hang in there, but then I got a call from a guest, that had come the night before, who told me that she couldn't stay there, because the lighting wasn't bright enough for her to put on her make-up and that she found a piece of trash under the sofa and why I wouldn't check the place before I let guests in.

Yes, 99% chance this is a bad idea...One thing you said strike me as really odd is that everyone you know has family assistance.... then you are probably hanging around the wrong crowd.... everyone that I know do not have family assistance.... seriously....Plus someone that succeeds on his/her own have the tendency to resent people who would ask for help becasue that is not how they made their money , and so they don't believe in it...
