I have the paint but not sure if I will end up painting the whole room to avoid color miss match or just over the patches.

We use a very light beige color (neutral, not cold or warm) and we paint walls, baseboards and trim all one color.  

Further clarification - when we were renting the unit to them, they had asked if we can change the carpet as they didn't like the color (the bedrooms have non neutral color carpets).
