Depending on the age and material of the pipes, it is entirely possible for them to "burn" clear through the drain line, creating leaks that will require replacing pipes hidden in the wall or under the floor.

Long story shorter I went into the crawl to make sure it was vented and found out the laundry room drain, shower and kitchen sink were draining into the clay pipes that lead to the drainage tile.

@Tyrone MarsonI think @Randall Alan had a lot of great points.If you manage them yourself, give them expectations upfront when are appropriate times to contact you for non emergency items, what constitutes an emergency which for us was largely active running water like a pipe break (go over location of cut off valves with them at move in) and loss of heat over winter.
