Sump pump for dummies.

In short it is working. Just takes all day to pump the water out the basment when it rains. It is also VERY loud and you can feel it vibrating the entire living floor. 

Why is it doing this?

And someone told me to install french drains. What are those?

You may need to replace your sump pump.  I replaced one of mine a few years ago for less than $100.  Easy.
