Look everyone goes through rough times but the clear solution is: if you knew you weren't going to be able to pay for your living arrangement is for you to simply move out and find a more affordable living arrangement but you didn't do that.

Whether that's the case or not depends on 1) whether you discussed and agreed to the arrangement in advance 2) if you can demonstrate alternative benefits he received by you staying.If it was me I'd ask if you couldn't have rented that room for even just $300/mo?
