The thicker, the better - it will sound better and bring a quality feel to your property. 

As others have said, you can get replacement tiles from Home Depot to replace any that are broken or damaged, and then just put a fresh coat of paint on so that they all match.

Wash it and roll on two coats of Kilz Original Oil-Based Primer with a short-nap epoxy roller.

Again, I'm not going to sugar coat the fact that my budget is small but my wife and I are dependable.

I am confused as you are about quality but it seems some have thicker wear layers and others have thinner stronger wear layers, with ceramic or aluminum added to the wear layer for hardness.
