You will have more options on the color wheel with hardwood as you can pick a factory color or mix two for a color of your own (depending on the stain line).

All you have to do is buy new doors/drawer fronts and change the trims around the doors using a refacing material if you plan on going with a different color, if you're keeping the same color then shouldn't need to change that as long as the colors match (the companies that make the doors have 1000's of colors so not hard to match them).
