Typically educational costs incurred to obtain a designation that can qualify you for new position are not deductible, costs incurred that maintain or improve your skills within a current position are deductible.For example continuing professional education taken by a CPA to maintain the CPA license would be deductible, but if that same CPA took law classes that led to a Law degree (so the CPA could now practice Law) that would not be deductible.

While their income may indicate they live below the poverty line, college students are not in poverty nor do they have a degree....yet
