The ones we used are made out of composite decking.I agree, if your balcony deck us lumber or plywood, you will likely have too much flex for ceramic, porcelain, or stone tiles.

If you like to re do them every few years do the surround,,,if you want to once and done for 20 years,,,strip to studs, plastic 4 mill,,cement board,,,red guard,,,ceramic tile,,,grout with no seal additive.Clawfoot tubs are four sided slop pits in rentals.

In general, window and wall units are fine, provided they're of appropriate size for your space (so no one window unit or tiny ceramic heater for a whole house).
