Is it cost effective to do flooring yourself?

For a newbie, doing ceramic/porcelain tile oneself could take a very long time I assume, with the inevitable measurement mistakes, do-overs, etc.

How much money do you save by doing tile (or flooring in general) by yourself? Is the frustration and delays worth the savings over having a pro do it?

Last job I paid to have most of the tile done. I paid $3.50 a foot, and that included ripping out the old stuff, installing backer board, installing the tile, grouting and sealing. You might be able to get it cheaper than that. For me, this chopped a bunch of late nights out of the schedule and probably saved me two weeks. So, that's two more weeks rent, about $600, in exchange for $1400 in cash out the door. Net $800 cost to avoid a BUNCH of work.

On the other hand, when it was time to do the backsplashes I did them myself. That's only an afternoon's works, and trying to get the tile guy there are the right time would have been a pain.

I did also get a nice hammer-head sized dent in the tub. Would not have been too big a deal if they had fessed up when it happened. But it was covered up with debris and I didn't discover it until they had been paid. Grrr.
