You should buy a property with STR in mind if that's where you're heading....Remember - you can always turn a STR into a LTR, but not the other way around.

I was in your shoes scratching my head wondering where all those deals were and how are people buying in the current market.

In my market, condo investing is more of a long-term appreciation play since most deals do not cashflow without a substantial down payment.All the best!
