I am surprised that a bank can be wiped out after only 4 years but that makes sense for a public policy standpoint of allowing properties to get clear title instead of remain in limbo forever.

As @Wayne Brooks posted, see if your state has a post-public auction redemption period, and if so to what type of courthouse sales dies redemption apply, and for how long. 

The new lender (and the public) would know of the transactions.

Advertising a home publicly before you own it is a no no in my book.

No trash cans on the curb is another confirmation of the property being vacant.Sometimes they can be difficult at first but it is public information.
