They only might have said the property is "as-is" which you would honor, but the process of closing requiring travel should have been disclosed in the online auction.

In Texas, when we buy or sell a property we must disclose that we're a licensed real estate agent.I was also told by one of my instructors that if a seller wants to sell their property for under what it's worth, as a licensed buyer we must disclose the potential value of the property.

Each state is different, but I'm pretty sure when you miss the required time to disclose the application of the deposit to damages, rent, whatever.....the deposit horse has left the barn, and is now Totally unrelated to, nor available for, offsetting rent, or damages.
