Financial/real estate/investing education, live a frugal life style and save every penny, concentrate on getting your credit score in the high 7s.Education is all available on line, cash and high credit score are necessary for success.What you must do is make investing your first priority in life and by doing so it will all fall into place.

I want to try different things; I want a flexible lifestyle in the sense that I can travel and be with my family, but I also don't mind working 70-80 hour weeks when necessary. 

Down size, adjust to a frugal life style, pay off all bad debt...credit cards and student loans, sell the cars and buy affordable vehicles with cash.With a income of 180K /year this should be easy to achieve in a reasonably short period of time if you are dedicated to your goals.

I can at this point I do not have to work for the next 6-8 months and I will be able to maintain my current lifestyle which I believe to be a good buffer into getting into a 1099 position.

I think the best option is for me to keep living at lower expense life style and throw some money monthly to the principal to begin to try to earn some equity.
