Something I forgot to mention before:  I have seen toilet and sink connectors, and washing machine hoses, that have a valve in one end that are supposed to shut off the flow if the attached device starts using "too much" water. 

I'm in a coffee shop in Puerto Rico at the moment but we also got started (my wife and I) through purchases of our primary residences and then renting them out.
