I'm sure you've heard already but i wanted to share that the easiest way to track down a mentor is by attending the monthly meetings that are in your area.

@Bryan Tasumi, I always recommend: invest in BARGAIN properties (rather than bother with shares).

I would like to network with people who have similar goals and learn from people who have done this successfully.If someone can share with me how to calculate a 'make sense' rental investment?

Have to do your best to help everyone feel comfortable.You never know who will share the golden nuggets of advice that set you on a great path.

Much like what @Julia Bykhovskaia mentioned except you would share in the equity instead of them just providing the debt.  

If someone is open enough to share them with you, then by all means!

An example of a property I recently looked at in Torrington is a 3 family with off street parking, a 2 car garage and a shared driveway with 2 other properties, older home but it is well maintained.
